Claim Owner's Greeting
Onalaska, WI. my wife and I had a house there. The view from the hot tub, overlooked the Black River, Lake Onalaska, the MIGHTY Mississippi and clear to the bluffs of Minnesota. This was home, is home and always will be. Why I left, I still dont know.
A Little Bit About Life in My Town
Onalaska and the greater Lacrosse area. You can drive anywhere in 20 min. sober, 30 min. well you know.
I have traveled many places around the world and lived in many states, but this is home.
The area offers many organized festivals (excuses to party) as anyone would want; Sunfish Days, Catfish Days, Summerfest, Cornfest, Applefest and of coarse the LARGEST OCTOBERFEST EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI! Really, no joke. People come from hundreds of miles away to watch the parade with a keg of beer on the street corner along the parade route. Everyones objective is to be drunk before the parade even starts, to stay warm of coarse. People camp out the night before on their lawn chairs on the sidewalks to save thier parade spots. After the parade finishes the fest grounds open for over a week, hosting live music from all over the US and cold beer flows, and flows, and flows. At midnight the fest grounds close and the streets are blocked of to traffic. The October Festers migrate to the streets and the bar scenes because they didn't have quite enough fun yet. It's really fun! If you get a chance, go. This is an all ages party. Everyone is in the mix.
Well now that I just re-lived part of my life, thank you for reading and I hope it was interesting. What do you say we go a bit deeper into the area.
Onalaska Lands and Waters.
Bluffs - Where the bluffs are tall and beautiful. For those of you who don't know what a bluff is, they are rocky formations (small mountains) that weren't cleared during the ice age by the glaciers, around when my parents were born. Sorry POPS! He is 48603. Check out his site when he is completed. This region is called the driftless region.
The Mississippi River - Beautiful, really there are so many places to boat, fish and swim. Think about it, the Mississippi is the boaters highway from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The only inland international waterway in the US. With the river being so wide in many areas there are natural islands everywhere, to camp and party. Check out renting a house boat and travel up and down the river! The views are beautiful and there are many good resteraunts between Onalaska and Lacrosse that you have access to while boating, thats if you don't get sucked into an island party with strangers. People are very friendly! We boaters and island campers have nicknames in Wisconsin, River Rats. I am proud to be one!
The Mississippi and surrounding lakes created by the river are great for fishing. Lake Onalaska boasts one of the best bluegill and crappie fishing lakes in the state of Wisconsin, all year around and also great for large and small mouth fishing. The Black and the Mississippi Rivers are also known for pan and bass fishing but the big catches are the catfish and the walleye! This is where the fun really happens. If your most interested in walleyes go to Dresback Damn or fishing around the many wing damns. Avoid the many wing damns, lower units and wingdamns are not friendly to each other and become costly!
Lake Onalaska is also a bird sanctuary called the Upper Mississippi Refuge, there are 265 different species of birds that live and migrate to and from this area. The craziest bird I saw on the lake was a white pelican, actually a flock of pellicans in front of my house. Did you know pelicans migrate north in the summer? I didn't until I bought a house on the water! There are also over 57 species of mammals, 35 species of reptiles and amphibians and over 100 species of fish in the refuge. The Refuge is over 200,000 acres and over 260 miles long. Just another selling point, over 3.5 million people a year travel to Onalaska to take part in bird watching, boating, fishing and just plain having fun.
Just a quick snapshot of the area. Will post more later.
