Claim Owner's Greeting
Welcome to all, and especially to those interested in showing support to the Armed Forces Service people from our town who are currently deployed overseas. And if you ARE one of our deployed service people, make sure you check in here often and let us 'folks back home' know how you're doing!

A Little Bit About Life in My Town
Screven is what you would call a small town with a big heart.

The population is the town is less than 800, and yet we currently have quite a few of our town serving their country as 'active duty' in various branches of the military.

This would not surprise you too much if you know Screven. Here, patriotism, love of God and country, and sense of duty run deep. Its no accident that we are known for our Fourth of July celebration - attended each year by thousands of people from all over Wayne County and other neighboring counties of South Georgia.

Screven is also home to the National Champion Turkey Oak Tree. No kidding. What's that you say? I was ready for that, so here is a picture.

This is just one tree of the many that made our beautiful small town an Arbor Day Tree City for twelve years running!

Currently, Neil Stanfield is serving as Mayor of Screven.

Though not directly impacting Screven just yet, Georgia's worst wildfire is not far away. It appears that winds have shifted east and are threatening Waycross, which is west of Screven. Large tree farms exist all over the southeast, almost all are pine. Though I'm no expert in the field, it's my experience that pines catch easy and burn fast and hard. We're keeping everyone in our prayers.

We've finally found time to finish uploading all of the pictures of Screven's Pride. I (Isaac) personally grew up with most of the posted servicemen. We're still looking for more photos, as I do know there are other Screvenites who are serving - we've just not been able to locate them yet.

Hello all! We've added a few new pictures of Screvenites proudly serving in the Armed Forces. We have more pictures to be uploaded shortly. In the meantime, if you have further information about any of the men and women we're saluting, be sure to add it to the guestbook (top right of this page).

We've finally managed to post a picture of another Dover family member who is actively serving in the US Armed Forces. Master Sergeant Wesley Dover is a proud member of the 48th Infantry division. Having served in Iraq and Bosnia, among other deployments, we're proud to finally make his and his family's faces known to our visitors.

Wesley is still living in the same small town we all love, Screven. As avid sports fans, this is a family that stays active out of doors, as well as within the Screven First Baptist Church community.

Sorry for the delay in posting. We were made aware that Chris Dover is now in Baghdad. At the moment, he has no internet access, and can only use an unreliable satellite phone to keep in touch with family. His first week or more was spent in a hole in the desert, something that should remind us how much we take common daily things for granted.

In addition, we'd like to extend our sympathies to the families and friends that were affected by the recent horrible acts at Virginia Tech. We're praying for a quick recovery to normal life, as hard as it is to imagine at the moment.

Actually, there is a bit of a story, Brotherman. Chris was forced to fly via Blackhawk helicopter over what was considered rather "unfriendly" areas to get to see his brother. What you see around them are mazes of concrete wall. The perspective is a bit off becuase they are further back than you'd expect. The walls are around 8' tall.

I see you added more people from your town. I'm amazed at so many from such a small town. The last picture of Wesley and Chris Dover is pretty interesting too. I bet there is a story there. How would they be able to arrange to meet? Or was it just chance?
